All health insurance providers need to offer the same minimum coverage across hospital cover product tiers. The Australian government introduced this system to make it simpler to compare your private health insurance options.

The tiers are:

  • Basic – Entry-level cover for some hospital clinical categories
  • Bronze – Cover for common hospital clinical categories
  • Silver – Cover for a wide range of hospital clinical categories
  • Gold – Cover for all hospital clinical categories

If you have a family membership which includes an eligible hospital cover (with or without extras cover), Bupa Family Plus adds an extra premium to your normal Bupa premium so your dependant can stay on your policy. The additional premium covers one or more Family Plus dependents registered on your membership. Because your dependant will be on your membership, they’ll have exactly the same cover as you, subject to any relevant waiting periods.
