We’re legally required to send Bupa tax statement information to the ATO for all of our eligible customers, even for those who don’t have to lodge a tax return.

If you do have to submit an income tax return, as long as your information with Bupa is correct, your health insurance tax information should appear pre-filled on myTax online, or with your tax accountant.

From 10 July 2026, you can download your Bupa tax statement from your myBupa inbox, or contact us to request a copy to be sent out to you.

If you suspend your private health insurance and your circumstances change, you may need to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge, depending on your income. You are not considered to have hospital cover for tax purposes while your health insurance membership is suspended. Learn more about the income thresholds and the Medicare Levy Surcharge on the Australian Taxation Office website.

We recommend you get independent tax advice to understand any implications for you.

If your policy is currently suspended and you can’t access myBupa, you can contact us for a copy of your tax statement after 10 July 2026.

A zero dollar amount in your Bupa tax statement means you didn’t make a payment in that financial year. Your Bupa tax statement will just show the number of days you were covered.

This means that you’ve not held appropriate cover for all of the last financial year. There are a few reasons this may be the case:

  • Policy suspensions, including financial hardship and overseas travel suspensions, as your policy is effectively paused, you are not covered by a private health insurance policy.
  • If you’ve added or removed hospital cover at any point over the last financial year and had periods without coverage, this will also apply as days not covered.
