What happens if I remove someone?
Will you contact the person who's coming off the policy?
Yes. We'll contact them through the individual contact details we have for them to let them know they're being removed from this policy and to discuss their cover needs. We'll also send them a clearance certificate showing their cover history under this policy. If we don't have individual contact details for them, we'll use the details registered on the policy.
What happens to their waiting periods?
When someone comes off a Bupa policy, they have 60 days to take out cover under another Bupa policy to avoid serving waiting periods again. If they're without cover at the end of this period, they'll need to re-serve all waiting periods when they take out another health insurance policy. This period can be different if taking out cover with another fund.
Will my premiums decrease?
Removing people from your policy will reduce your premiums if this changes the policy from:
- Any family type to single.
- Family to single parent.
- Family to couple (OVC/ OSHC only).
- Family plus to family, couple, single parent, or single parent plus.
- Single parent plus to single parent.
Will removing someone from my policy affect my tax return?
Removing someone from your policy who you claim as a dependant on your tax return may leave you liable for the Medicare Levy Surcharge if they don't hold any other hospital cover, depending on your income. The ATO or a tax specialist can advise if this is the case in your individual situation.
Can the policyholder be removed from a policy?
The policyholder can't be removed. If the policyholder needs to come off a policy for any reason, the spouse on the policy must become the policyholder before this can take place. You'll need to contact us to complete this change.
How to remove a person from your policy
You can't use myBupa to remove people from your policy if you're on an overseas visitor or student policy, or if your premiums are paid by payroll deduction.
