Delivered by Clean Slate Clinic, the at home alcohol detox program offers:
A medically supported detox in the comfort and convenience of home, at no extra cost#
Daily scheduled telehealth calls with a specialist nurse during the detox period
12-months of follow-up support, which includes weekly calls for the first month following detox, monthly calls for three months and agreed check-ins at the 6, 9 and 12-month mark
What does the program provide?
Traditionally, a person will be admitted to a hospital or other type of inpatient facility for a number of days or weeks in order to treat substance dependence. However, Clean Slate Clinic has developed a 12-month program of assessment, withdrawal and recovery, delivered fully via virtual care, for individuals concerned about their alcohol use. Bupa is proud to be the first health insurer to fund this service in Australia.
Prior to enrolment, a specialist nurse from Clean Slate Clinic will undertake an assessment via telehealth to ensure you are suitable for the program. A General Practitioner (GP) from Clean Slate Clinic will also have a video consultation with you prior to commencing detox. With your consent, Clean Slate Clinic will also liaise with your regular GP (if you have one) so they can also support you in your recovery.
The 12-month at home alcohol detox program provides:
- A program induction to help you prepare psychologically, socially and physically for detox success post withdrawal
- Vitamins and a breathalyser to support you during the detox+
- Prescriptions for medication to manage withdrawal symptoms if needed
- A recovery plan and post detox review with a doctor from Clean Slate Clinic
- Prescriptions for medication to reduce cravings after the detox if needed
- Access to a peer support group managed by Clean Slate Clinic
- With your consent, updates to your regular GP so they can also support your recovery
- Scheduled follow-up calls with a specialist nurse from Clean Slate Clinic^
- Strategies to help you in the event of a relapse.

Program eligibility
If you meet the following criteria, you may be eligible for the Clean Slate Clinic at home alcohol detox program:
- You are a Bupa Health Insurance customer with a hospital policy that includes unrestricted cover for hospital psychiatric services – check what you’re covered for or contact us
- You can access the Clean Slate Clinic program in available areas (NSW, Vic, Qld, WA, Tas, NT, ACT)
- You are aged between 18 and 80
- You meet all clinical requirements outlined during the assessment process with Clean Slate Clinic
- You have a support person at home who has received information from Clean Slate Clinic
- You have a regular GP who is responsible for the continuity of your care (with your consent, Clean Slate Clinic can appoint a GP to your care if needed)
- You have access to a smartphone or other means of accessing telehealth services.

#Waiting periods, fund, policy and program eligibility rules apply. Depending on your level of cover some out-of-pocket costs may apply, like hospital excess or co-payments, fees for medical tests or specialist consultations not covered by bulk billing, and medication (including pharmacy dispensing fees and copayments for medicines on the PBS and the full cost of medicines not on the PBS). Additional expenses such as having a compatible smart device and reliable phone and internet connection also apply for virtually delivered care.
+Pack includes a 30-day supply of vitamins. A new breathalyser is provided by Clean Slate Clinic for use during the detox period and is the customers to keep. Any ongoing maintenance must be paid by the customer.
^Weekly, monthly and quarterly calls will be scheduled directly by Clean Slate Clinic specialist nurses and occur within their operating hours of Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm (AEST), excluding public holidays. Calls can be up to 45 minutes in duration.
Bupa Health Insurance will fund eligible customers in accordance with their policy issued by Bupa Health Insurance Pty Ltd. To avoid doubt, Bupa Telehealth Pty Ltd and Bupa Health Centres Pty Ltd are not involved in the design and delivery of the program.
