Travel insurance comparisons: The ins and outs

If you’re thinking about travelling, then taking out a travel insurance policy can help provide peace of mind that you’ll have cover when you need it most. In this article we take a closer look at some of things that travel insurance can cover and compare some of your best options for when you’re on the go.

Medical and dental cover
When you’re travelling overseas, Medicare won’t cover you for your medical and dental cost outside of Australia if you get sick overseas. Travel insurance can cover you if you get sick or injured and need medical assistance. It can also cover you if you get so sick or injured that you need to be flown home to Australia - something that can be very costly – in some cases upwards of tens of thousands of dollars.

Pre-existing medical conditions
It’s really important to declare any pre-existing medical conditions with your insurer, because otherwise if they flare up, you may not be covered automatically by your policy. There are travel insurance options to cover pre-existing medical conditions, but you will usually be asked to complete a medical assessment to see if you are eligible.

Age limits may also apply
Age limits may also apply for medical coverage, so check with your insurer - don’t simply assume that you will automatically covered for medical and dental costs. Again you may need a medical assessment prior to coverage approval.

Trip cancellation
Sometimes life gets in the way of your holiday plans and you may have to cancel your travel arrangements. It might be that you or your partner gets too sick to travel before you go, or the event you wanted to go to gets cancelled or washed out. So if an unforeseen event gets between you and your trip away, then travel insurance can help to cover the cost of cancellation.

Delays and stay overs
Flights get cancelled all the time for lots of reasons, and if you’re in the unfortunate situation of being delayed and stuck at an airport overnight until the next day, you’ll want to find a hotel to stay the night. Travel insurance can cover you for incidental expenses such as accommodation and meals.

Lost or damaged baggage and personal items
It doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s something that every traveller faces at some stage or other - the pain of lost, stolen or damaged belongings. Always check your luggage as soon as you arrive at your destination. If something has been stolen, damaged or lost you’ll want report any loss, damage or theft to the police or the appropriate authority within 24 hours. Travel insurance can cover you for the loss so while it may be annoying to have happened, you at least you know you have cover in place to help ease the pain.

Compare your travel insurance options
Travel insurance can cover you for a wide variety of situations that may happen while you’re travelling. It’s worth it to spend the time comparing your options and finding out what is included in your coverage and what you’re not covered for. And remember talk to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer before you go to make sure you’re covered for medical.
