Free health mentoring program for carers

The job you do is an incredibly important one and Bupa wants to be here to support you as you do it. That’s why we have developed ‘Caring for our carers’ - a free health mentoring program for carers of people who are participating in (or transitioning to) a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) package.

While you are invested in caring for others physically and emotionally, it’s important to take care of your own health and wellbeing, to help you maintain the physical and emotional energy you need to care for others.

What will I get out of this program?

This program is about looking at practical things you can do to keep yourself in a good state of energy and wellbeing. We understand that this can be difficult for carers - getting enough sleep and finding downtime or ‘me-time’ can be particularly challenging.

We’ll provide you with your own health mentor is a specially trained and qualified nurse or health professional with experience in supporting those in challenging situations.

Over the course of 6 months, your health mentor will guide you through a series of phone calls and self-directed online sessions, all of which will generally go for between 10 and 20 minutes and will be scheduled at times that are convenient for you.

We are not here to get you to do things that don’t suit your personal circumstances – you have a wealth of knowledge and experience and nobody knows you better than yourself. However, these sessions provide an opportunity for you to step back, reflect, and consider things from a fresh perspective. The program includes strategies to support your energy levels and overall wellbeing. We understand that it is important that you look after yourself in order to maintain the physical and emotional energy you need to care for others.

What will be covered?

Everybody’s situation is unique, so the program has been designed specifically to provide you with encouragement, guidance and individually tailored information. Your program will be tailored to your circumstances, but will include:

  • the basics of energy and wellbeing
  • physiology –  the systems in your body that underpin energy
  • the pillars of wellbeing, including sleep, downtime, nutrition, social time and relationships
  • finding time to care for yourself
  • mindset – the role that it plays in your energy and wellbeing
  • how to stay on track and maintain changes

"I’ve worked with many people who have significant caring responsibilities for others and see that too often the support for the person doing the caring is missed. I have designed this program so it’s not 'one size fits all'. Instead it’s tailored to you and your personal circumstances."

"I was at a low point, having been through a really difficult time caring for my daughter who is blind, has cerebral palsy and also has an intellectual disability. I was offered the health mentoring program around this time. Being given ‘permission’ to make time for myself was important and really helpful for me."

How often will I speak with my health mentor?

Your health mentor will work with you to determine the frequency of sessions that works best for you. Generally, most customers prefer more frequent contact early in the program with longer intervals between calls as they progress.

How much does it cost to join the program?

There is no cost! The program is funded by an innovation grant from the Commonwealth Department of Social Services, so is available free of charge to individuals who are caring for somebody who is participating in (or transitioning to) an NDIS package. It is offered over and above any financial support you may be receiving as part of an NDIS package.

The program is available to employed carers, those receiving a carer’s allowance or payment, and unpaid carers.
