Mental health

Taking the first step with managing mental health is an important but sometimes difficult step. Stigma, embarrassment, denial, or confusion are common reasons why patients choose to not take action earlier. In many cases the first step is simply having a conversation with your GP about your mental wellbeing and discussing issues that are concerning you.

When first discussing your mental health we encourage you to talk to your GP about:

  • Your medical and mental health history
  • Your symptoms of concern
  • Activities that may have adverse effects to your mental health, such as illicit drug use, alcohol dependence or abuse
  • Any medication or therapies you are taking, including prescription or over-the-counter medication, or herbal and vitamin supplements
  • Recent events that could affect your wellbeing such as relationship issues or loss of employment

From this your GP will have a better understanding of your needs and will provide you with appropriate options, including referral to other health professionals such as counsellors and psychologists. Your GP can also create a personalised care plan that includes your healthcare needs, goals, treatment and referrals.
