Bupa Hospital Arrangements

At Bupa we care about your health and the cost of your healthcare. So we are helping you get greater value, certainty and simplicity.

Bupa has agreements with many private hospitals and day surgeries around Australia to provide members with certainty about the hospital costs associated with treatment. At most agreement hospitals, members will have a 'no gap' experience for hospital costs associated with your stay (except for any excess or copayment or exclusions that may apply to your level of cover). These hospitals will also forward your hospital charges directly to Bupa, to save you the inconvenience of making a claim.

So to get the best value from your Bupa hospital insurance, we suggest you choose a hospital with an agreement with Bupa.

You can search for a hospital with an agreement via our hospital search function or by downloading a Bupa Hospital Listing (PDF, 300kb).

What do these arrangements mean for me?

At a small number of Network hospitals you may be charged a fixed daily fee for one type of service (either rehabilitation or psychiatric).

Fixed Fee Hospitals

Bupa has arrangements with a small number of hospitals where members receive the same benefits as a Network Hospital but members may be charged a fixed daily fee. This fee is charged per day and capped at a maximum number of days per stay. The hospital should inform you of the out of pocket expense when making a booking. The fixed daily fee charged by the hospital is in addition to any excess or copayment you may have as part of your hospital cover.

Members who hold Ultimate Cover have this fee reimbursed so if you want peace of mind regarding fixed fee hospitals please talk to a Bupa consultant about upgrading your level of cover.

At Fixed Fee Hospitals members will receive the following benefits:

  • A fixed gap for hospital accommodation, intensive care and theatre
  • Free local phone calls and free to air television.
  • Surgically implanted prosthesis paid up to the minimum level required by federal Government
  • Payments towards the fees charged by the surgeon, anaesthetist or other specialist for your inpatient treatment – ask your doctor about using the Bupa Medical Gap Scheme designed to eliminate or reduce your medical costs.

A fixed fee charge, for a limited number of days will apply in addition to product excess and copayments

Product excesses and co-payments also apply

Public Hospitals

If a you are treated as a public patient in a Public Hospital you will receive free treatment for accommodation, intensive care and theatre, prostheses and medical services.

If you elect to be treated as a private patient in a public hospital you are entitled to choose your doctor, if they are available. Depending on your illness or condition, this may be the same doctor who would have been allocated to you by the hospital as a public patient.

If you elect to be treated as a private patient in a public hospital, we will pay shared room minimum benefits and benefits for prostheses up to the benefit in the Government Prostheses List. This will apply for any treatment recognised by Medicare unless it is excluded or restricted under your cover.

If you choose to stay in a private room for an overnight stay, Bupa will pay a fixed benefit in addition to the shared room minimum benefit.

It is important to note that in public hospitals, private rooms are generally allocated to people who medically need them.

If the hospital charges are greater than the Bupa benefit, you will be required to pay the balance as an out of pocket expense. The hospital should let you know what these expenses will be before you elect to be a private patient.

You will also be responsible for personal expenses such as TV hire and telephone calls and any prostheses charges above the benefit in the Government Prostheses List.

We also make payments towards the fees charged by the surgeon, anaesthetist or other specialist for your inpatient treatment – ask your doctor about using the Bupa Medical Gap Scheme designed to eliminate or reduce your medical costs.

Product excesses and co-payments apply.
