Bupa Australia and Healthscope are pleased to announce they have reached a two-year in-principle agreement to ensure customers will continue to experience no additional out of pocket expenses when receiving care at a Healthscope hospital. This agreement ensures Bupa customers remain fully covered when receiving care at Healthscope hospitals with certainty that no additional hospital charges will be passed on.

Our aim has been, and always will be, ensuring our customers have access to high-quality, affordable private healthcare. We are proud to have reached an outcome that serves our customers’ best interests, while supporting the continued delivery of safe, high-quality care.

There is no change for Bupa customers.

We acknowledge the uncertainty this may have caused and want to thank our customers for their patience and understanding throughout the past few months while Bupa and Healthscope were working towards an agreement. Our priority throughout negotiations has been ensuring private health remains affordable for our customers while also acknowledging the cost pressures hospitals are facing, and supporting Healthscope to continue to deliver high-quality care, in a sustainable way.

This new agreement means our customers can continue to access the full range of services offered at Healthscope’s 38 facilities around Australia with certainty that they won’t face additional hospital charges.

Bupa is proud to maintain one of the largest hospital networks in Australia, supporting access to private healthcare for over 4.4 million Australians. Working in partnership with Australia’s largest hospital groups and independent providers, in the last 12 months, Bupa has signed new agreements with Ramsay Health Care, St Vincent’s Health Australia, Mater Health, Healthe Care and now, Healthscope.

As always, we encourage you to contact us prior to your admission to any hospital to understand how you are covered, and to seek Informed Financial Consent from the hospital and any treating medical specialists as part of your admission.

Informed Financial Consent means that:

  • You've been informed about the costs you can expect, and what benefits you're getting for that cost. Your doctor and hospital have a responsibility to give you all the information before you have your treatment
  • You consent to them, knowing what you're getting, and what you'll need to pay

Your Informed Financial Consent should include:

  • Information about your procedure, including the item number, and the fee for each item
  • What you'll pay for things like your accommodation, and use of the operating theatre
  • What you'll pay for each doctor, including your anaesthetist
  • What you'll pay for any prostheses you are having
  • Your signature, or the signature of your guardian

Find out more about Informed Financial Consent

Your doctor could also use the Australian Medical Association's (AMA) Template to give you Informed Financial Consent.
