Application for Lactation Consultant recognition

Bupa has absolute discretion in granting recognition to any ancillary provider. Meeting the criteria below does not guarantee recognition. Bupa will exercise this discretion where required, on a case-by-case basis.

To attain Bupa recognition as a lactation consultant, you must meet and satisfy all aspects of our recognition criteria, as follows:

  • Be a full member of a relevant professional association, which meets the requirements, set out in the Bupa Accreditation Terms for Professional Associations. An example of a relevant professional association is the Lactation Consultants of Australia and New Zealand Ltd.
  • Must maintain a minimum number of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours directly relevant to the applicant's context of practice.
    Please speak with your association on these requirements.
  • Possess public risk/liability insurance for not less than $2,000,000 per claim and professional indemnity insurance for not less than $2,000,000 per claim.
  • Maintain current and up-to-date skills in CPR and first aid application.
  • Bupa Recognised Providers are required to be in private practice#.
  • Please read Bupa's Ancillary Provider Terms (PDF) carefully, so that you are fully aware of Bupa's expectations for all Bupa recognised ancillary providers.

If you wish to apply for recognition with Bupa, please supply the following information:

  • A completed and signed Application for Provider Recognition Form (PDF)
  • Evidence of your International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant certificate
  • Evidence of your current Professional Indemnity Insurance policy
  • Evidence of your Business Entity Name and Trading Name (including the submission of your Australian Business Number - ABN)
  • A sample copy of a business tax invoice/receipt - An example is a receipt provided to your patient/client as proof of payment for lactation services.

Once you have signed and completed the application form, please email all required documentation, including the above referenced documents to provopsancillary@bupa.com.au.

IMPORTANT: Midwives who are registered with Medicare Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) do not need to apply for recognition as a Lactation Consultant.

#Private Practice means a health care practice operating on an independent and self-supporting basis either as a sole trader, partnership, corporate or group practice but is not subsidised by another party such as any type of publicly funded facility for the provision of accommodation, facilities or other services or practitioners. The provision of Treatment at a public hospital or any other type of publicly funded facility is not Treatment provided in Private Practice.
