Bupa recognition criteria

Provision of hand therapy custom-made splints

Bupa has absolute discretion in granting recognition to any ancillary provider. Meeting the below criteria does not guarantee recognition. Bupa will exercise this discretion where required on a case-by-case basis.

To attain Bupa recognition for the payment of benefits for the provision of hand therapy custom made splints, you must be in private practice#, be registered with Medicare Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist and fulfil the following criteria:

#Private Practice means a health care practice operating on an independent and self-supporting basis either as a sole trader, partnership, corporate or group practice but is not subsidised by another party such as any type of publicly funded facility for the provision of accommodation, facilities or other services or practitioners. The provision of Treatment at a public hospital or any other type of publicly funded facility is not Treatment provided in Private Practice.

Applicants must hold current, full membership of the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA).

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a minimum of 12 months full-time experience (or part time equivalent) in a Hand Therapy practice, supported by a letter from the supervising practitioner.
  • Demonstrate attainment of continuing professional development points specific to hand splinting and orthotic fabrication by providing details of the completed courses or provide evidence of current competence equivalent. Please speak with your association on these requirements.
