Recognition criteria

Provision of hand therapy custom-made splints

Bupa has absolute discretion in granting recognition to any Ancillary Provider. Meeting the below criteria does not guarantee recognition. Bupa will exercise this discretion where required on a case by case basis.

To attain Bupa recognition for the payment of benefits for the provision of hand therapy custom made splints, you must be in private practice and fulfil the following criteria:

Applicants must hold current, full membership of the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA)


Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold current registration as an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist with the relevant professional National Board, as administered by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
  • Have a minimum of 12 months full time experience (or part time equivalent) in a Hand Therapy practice, supported by a letter from the supervising practitioner;
  • Demonstrate attainment of continuing professional development points specific to hand splinting and orthotic fabrication by providing details of the completed courses or provide evidence of current competence equivalent .
