Bupa recognition criteria

Bupa has absolute discretion in granting recognition to any ancillary provider. Meeting the criteria below does not guarantee recognition. Bupa will exercise this discretion where required, on a case-by-case basis.

To attain Bupa recognition for the payment of benefits for the provision of mental health services, you must:

  • Be registered with Medicare Australia as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker
  • Be in private practice# at the location in which the services will be provided.

In addition to meeting the criteria above, each of the following requirements is mandatory:

  • Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Public risk/liability insurance must be current and maintained with the policy covering a minimum of $2,000,000 professional indemnity per claim and $20,000,000 public liability per claim. The insurance policy must cover each practice address covered by the registration.
  • Must meet and continue to meet our recognition criteria.
  • Must agree to abide by Bupa's Ancillary Provider Terms (PDF).

#Private Practice means a health care practice operating on an independent and self-supporting basis either as a sole trader, partnership, corporate or group practice but is not subsidised by another party such as any type of publicly funded facility for the provision of accommodation, facilities or other services or practitioners. The provision of Treatment at a public hospital or any other type of publicly funded facility is not Treatment provided in Private Practice.
