What types of cover do you need?
You can’t control when you get sick. Hospital cover pays benefits towards the cost of private treatment and gives you more choice and control if you need to go to hospital. You’ll be able to choose your doctor, preferred hospital and the timing of your procedure (subject to availability), and you’re likely to wait less time for your procedure. Enjoy a bunch of benefits through our agreements with hospitals and specialists.
Regular trips to the dentist or physio can add up. That’s where Extras cover can come in handy. Depending on the type of Extras cover you choose, once you serve your waiting periods you’ll be able to claim money back for some of the costs of everyday health services that may not be covered by Medicare - like dental, optical, physio & chiro - up to your yearly limits.

Why get health insurance?
Avoid waiting longer on planned surgery
The public hospital queues can be lengthy for elective surgeries, but with private health insurance, you have access to our network of private hospitals, where waiting lists for these surgeries can be significantly reduced. This means you could get treated sooner in some cases, so you can get on with the more exciting things in life.
Reduce costs when life happens
Private Health Cover helps cover the cost of doctor and hospital expenses when being admitted to hospital and treated as a private patient. Hospital cover gives you more choice and control if you need to go to hospital. You’ll be able to choose your doctor, preferred hospital and the timing of your procedure (subject to availability), and you’re likely to wait less time for your procedure.
Extra Savings with Extras
You get money back in your pocket for services like dental, optical, physio, chiro and podiatry consultations. To help you maximise the value from your cover, you’ll get between 60 – 100% back on most services at any of our Members First Healthcare Providers, up to yearly limits2.
You can Pay Less Tax
Most Australian residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of their taxable income to get access to healthcare. But if you’re single, earn over $90k a year (or a couple earning over $180k) and don't have appropriate hospital cover for you and all your dependants over the whole year, you may be charged the additional Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) of 1-1.5%. Speak to your tax adviser for advice on your personal circumstances.
Avoid or minimise the Lifetime Health Cover Loading
If you're 31 or over and don’t have hospital cover by June 30, and subsequently take out hospital cover, you could be hit paying the government’s Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading. That's an additional 2% for hospital cover every year you delay – up to a maximum of 70%.
