Travel Insurance FAQs
Am I covered for COVID-19?
Our international plans provide $unlimited overseas medical expenses cover if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip overseas. Cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of the illness.
Depending on the policy you choose, there is also some cover available for Amendment or Cancellation Costs and Additional expenses.
There is no COVID-19 related cover:
- for travel to a country subject to a 'do not travel' advice on www.smartraveller.gov.au or
- where a government authority closure, quarantine or isolation order is imposed on cross area, border, region or territory travel
What do I do if I need emergency assistance on my trip?
Call emergency services immediately if your condition is life threatening. Please call us DIRECT and TOLL FREE from: USA 1833 545 3376, Canada 1833 5410 281, UK 0800 072 0091, NZ 0800 451 169 or in Australia call us direct on: +61 2 8907 5201.
If the unexpected happens on your overseas trip call us as soon as you can, case managers are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with registered nurses and doctors available when you need them.
They'll step you through the process and take care of things. If you can't call us straight away, make sure you keep any documentation that may help with your claim, this could include, receipts, invoices, medical records or police reports, and contact us as soon as you're able to.
Please note additional charges may apply for any calls made from mobiles, public telephones or hotel rooms.
How far in advance can I purchase travel insurance?
It's up to you when you purchase travel insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:
- You can purchase Bupa Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
- If you purchase this policy on Your trip after leaving Home, this cover is subject to a 3 day no-cover period. This means there is no cover under any section of the policy for any event that has occurred already or that arises within the first 3 days of buying the policy.
- Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider purchasing travel insurance as soon as you've booked and paid for some or all of your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.
What if I have a pre-existing medical condition?
We automatically include cover for many existing medical conditions as outlined in the PDS provided that at the time you take out your policy:
- all your existing medical conditions are on this list;
- you have not been hospitalised or required treatment by a medical practitioner in the last 12 months for any of the listed conditions;
- you are not under investigation for any of the listed conditions;
- you are not awaiting investigation, surgery, treatment, or procedures for any of the listed conditions; and
- your condition meets the criteria outlined in the Travel Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Financial Services Guide (FSG).
If you have any conditions that don’t meet the auto-accept criteria or any conditions not on the list, please tell us all of your conditions and complete a health assessment at the same time you get your quote. If approved, an additional premium may apply.

Do you cover pregnancy?
If you're currently pregnant and:
- you've had pregnancy complications‡ with this or a previous pregnancy; or
- you're expecting more than one child,
- the conception was medically assisted e.g. using assisted fertility treatment including hormone therapies or IVF.
You will need to choose an eligible plan and complete our easy online medical assessment during purchase to apply for cover. Alternatively, you can call our contact centre and they can step you through the medical assessment over the phone, call us on 1300 556 721 (Weekdays 8am to 7pm AEST, Saturday 9am to 4pm AEST or Sunday 10pm to 3pm AEST).
Otherwise, you don't need to tell us about your pregnancy as your policy will automatically provide cover for pregnancy-related claims arising from an unforeseen event, as long as:
- the event occurs prior to the 24th week (i.e. up to 23 weeks and 6 days) of your pregnancy; and
- it's not something excluded under the policy.
Please note, pregnancy cover is for unforeseen events only, we don't cover:
- a pregnancy once it's 24 weeks or more gestation; or
- any expenses for routine or regular antenatal care; or
- childbirth at any stage of your pregnancy or costs relating to the care or health of a newborn child
