Why should I take out private health insurance?

Health insurance gives you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you can be covered for medical treatment in public and private hospital as well as for those services not covered by Medicare.

Here are some of the advantages of having private health insurance:

  • Lets you avoid public waiting lists and provides choice over when you are admitted for elective procedures in a private hospital.
  • Lets you have a say in choosing your own doctor or specialist.
  • Provides more affordable access to private hospitals.
  • Provides cover for services that Medicare doesn’t usually cover, including dental, optical, physiotherapy, chiropractic and natural therapies.
  • Helps you avoid the additional 1% Medicare Levy Surcharge* if you are a high income earner.
  • If you are eligible for full Medicare rights, you will receive a rebate on your Hospital and Extras premiums with the Federal Government Rebate on private health insurance.
  • Helps you avoid the Lifetime Health Cover loading.~

*The 1% Medicare levy surcharge (MLS) applies for each day you do not have private hospital cover and earn over $90,000 p.a. if you are single or $180,000 p.a. for couples and families with up to one child. These MLS figures apply to the 2013-14 financial year and are indexed annually. The MLS increases by $1,500 for each additional child. Please consult your tax adviser for more information about how MLS may apply to you. ~Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) does not apply to overseas visitors who are not permanent residents of Australia. Choosing your health insurance

Your choice of health cover should depend on your lifestyle and needs. You can choose Hospital cover or Extras cover separately, or a combination of both.

Hospital cover

What is Hospital cover?

Hospital cover is an affordable way to access private healthcare, which gives you the power to choose your own hospital, use your preferred doctor or specialist, and have greater choice when you are treated. It covers you for hospital treatment and in-patient medical expenses if you are admitted to any hospital within our network of private or public hospitals in Australia.

Extras cover

What is Extras cover?

Extras cover helps with the cost of services not usually covered by Medicare, such as dental, optical, physiotherapy, chiropractic and natural therapies. Plus at our Members First providers we have negotiated special agreements for our members that give you a guaranteed return on the cost of your treatment for selected services.

Packaged cover

What is Packaged cover?

Packaged cover is a type of cover that combines both Hospital and Extras cover in one convenient package. It covers you for the cost of hospital treatment and medical services in-hospital, as well as services such as dental, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage and psychology.

Which level of private health insurance do I need?

The level of private health insurance cover you should take out depends on your individual needs. We offer the following three levels of cover, with various different product options in each category:

High (top) cover

For comprehensive Hospital and Extras cover with maximum benefits and high protection. These cover options may be suitable for people of all ages who want our highest level of private health insurance cover.

Medium cover

Covers you for the services you think you are most likely to use or need. These cover options may be suited to young couples and families.

Low (basic) cover

If you don't want to pay for things you don't need at this stage in your life, you may want to consider a lower level of cover - may be suitable for people wanting the security of private health insurance for most essentials, and those wanting to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge*. These options may suit young singles, or families on a budget looking to cover their children.
