Meet Dwayne - Managing Director of Bupa's Health Insurance Business

Dr Dwayne Crombie

Dr Dwayne Crombie started as Managing Director of Bupa’s Health Insurance business in Australia. As a doctor, public health specialist and highly-regarded leader in both the public and private health sectors, Dwayne is ideally placed to bring fresh ideas to the table.

Dwayne has spent his life working towards bringing better healthcare and better outcomes to the people he serves. His cumulative experiences — from a student elective in paediatric gastroenterology in Brisbane, to health promotion for large communities in South Auckland, to CEO of North Health and the Waitemata District Health Board in New Zealand, and leadership roles within Bupa — have allowed him to witness firsthand the competing pressures and perspectives in health systems. And now, as Managing Director of Bupa’s Health Insurance arm in Australia, he’s excited about yet another opportunity to make a difference.

Prior to joining Bupa in Australia, Dwayne led the Bupa Care Services — residential aged care - business in New Zealand. Though aged care was a departure from the broader healthcare spectrum per se, the sensibilities that drew Dwayne to that role were consistent with values instilled in him years before. “When you come from a public health background, you’re often looking at the disadvantaged, or people who don’t get a fair go. You have a natural desire to help the underdog,” says Dwayne. “That’s a large part of what I found appealing about a leadership role in the aged care sector - I wanted to do a great job for older residents so that we could all feel proud that, despite the challenges, we were an organisation that genuinely made a difference. And there’s lots of tangible ways in which we delivered.”

Such sensibilities align perfectly with Bupa’s global ambitions, which target some of the toughest challenges in healthcare, including taking a stand for the frail and elderly, and empowering people to prevent or better manage chronic disease. That’s why Bupa identified Dwayne as the right man to lead our changing Health Insurance business. “I think what Bupa recognised in me was my broad knowledge of health, combined with my skill and experience in helping healthcare organisations, and the people at their core, to work better together and solve important problems. And the fact that, for me, health insurance is ultimately about helping people to access ways to stay or become healthier,” he shares.

It follows that Dwayne likes working for Bupa. “Bupa’s purpose and the reason why we are here leaves the way open for fantastic outcomes,” he says. “When we look at ways we can help our customers access the best care they can receive, in my experience, no single perspective is actually that useful. In a complex system, it’s the synergy from people with different backgrounds that enables you to produce a better result.”

One of Dwayne’s key drivers is to help Bupa become increasingly adept at ‘connecting the dots for the sake of the customer’, which he believes we can achieve if our transformation mindset is based not only on what we want for Bupa and Australians in the longer term but also on how we do things from day to day, in the here and now.
