Corporate Philanthropy, giving back - Bupa

Corporate Philanthropy

At Bupa, we don’t just care for the health of our members. We also care for, and provide support to the communities in which we operate, addressing our effect on the environment and offering opportunities for our employees to contribute to society through our business practices and partnerships.

How Bupa supports the community

We support our communities through a range of voluntary initiatives, which include:

Workplace Giving Program

Bupa employees are encouraged to participate in our Workplace Giving Program where they can choose to donate to any charity in Australia out of their pre-tax salary. More than $120,000 has been donated by employees to charities since 2007.

Employee Fund Matching Program

Our employees are passionate about their local communities. Through our Employee Fundmatching Program Bupa employees can raise funds for a registered charity and apply for up to $3,300 per year to be matched by the company.

Many charities and causes have benefited from the on-going fundraising efforts of Bupa employees, including the Australian Conservation Foundation, Heart Foundation, Kids Help Line, Redkite, Special Olympics, Flinders Medical Centre Foundation and Very Special Kids.

In 2010, our employees raised a combined fund of $73,322 for Australian charities. Bupa matched $50,468 for a total donation amount of $123,790.

National Volunteering Program

Our employees can undertake up to two volunteering days each year with their chosen charity or community organisation, or can participate in an organised Bupa volunteering event.

The national Bupa Volunteering Program enables all employees to learn new skills and gain a sense of purpose while reinforcing our commitment to helping people live a happier, healthier life.

Volunteering events across the country have involved landscaping a large sensory garden for autistic children and their families; improving the facilities for an assisted living centre that helps people with mental disabilities; and developing a vegetable garden to assist and educate young disadvantaged families.

Global Challenge

The Bupa Global Challenge is an international program that encourages our people and the broader community to become more active and embrace healthier lifestyles. In 2011 two events were held in Australia:

  • a pedometer challenge for Bupa employees and their family and friends, and
  • an opportunity for our employees to volunteer to support the Special Olympics Australia Football week celebrations in each Australian state.

Disaster Relief

Bupa responded immediately to the tragic Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi by donating $150,000 to the Premiers Disaster Appeal. In addition, more than $80,000 in matched donations and fundraising by our employees has been contributed to assist the families and communities affected by these natural disasters.

More than $250,000 has also been donated to support victims of the Victorian Bushfires and other international disasters over the last few years.
